A scam call uses a phone conversation to impersonate a trusted organisation or person and obtain information or money. Spam calls are unwanted marketing, but scam calls may include deception, threats, or requests for payment.
Warning signs
- An unknown, overseas, hidden, or unexpected number.
- Requests for passwords, banking details, payments, or remote access.
- Threats of arrest, fines, service disconnection, or other consequences.
- An offer of guaranteed investment returns or an unusually cheap service.
Stay safe
- Let unknown calls go to voicemail and hang up when a request seems suspicious.
- Call the organisation back using a trusted number, not one supplied by the caller.
- Enable phone spam filtering and block or report suspicious numbers.
- Keep personal contact details private and never share PINs or passwords by phone.
